20 Contemporary Icon Paintings from an Icon Painter in Mexico

Spiritual people!! How many of you would like to travel to San Miguel Allende, Mexico and meet an extraordinary artist doing byzantine style iconography on her own? The work is challenging, provocative and beautifully painted with pigments for mother earth. Mary Jane Miller has bent the ancient tradition just enough to incorporate images that elevate the soul and direct our hearts to love for the planet .

Her fine art and iconography blog posts are a step towards fresh ways to see the divine in all things. Miller believes there is nowhere you can go where there is not the finger of God represented. From the tops of mountains to the war-torn ravages of famine and climate disasters, we are not alone. The earth is here as a constant and perfect love will sustain it.

Orthodox iconography is rich in culture and tradition. It is experiencing a resurgence, but not from within the church but from outside. Women around the world have fallen in love with this ancient discipline and are teaching it as they learn themselves. Mary Jane Miller is one of those women. She is inspired and dedicated to giving the discipline a tiny face-lift. The Byzantine Church gave the world some of the most sacred and mystical art ever cherished. Miller hopes to add just one more if possible.

People from all around the world visit museums and temples just to gaze at the images. They emit soul transformation and mesmerizing beauty. Miller's first icons were a product of meditations on a theological precept from the ancient church. “God became man, that man might become God”. She studied how Iconographers for centuries have tried to capture the unseen presence of the divine through painting. Even the recipe illustrates the depth of the concept. Egg yolk is the raw potential for life, mixed with million year old dirt to create an image of God’s divine likeness in human form.

20 beautiful and inspiring images from Miller’s collection. Let us begin.
