Hi friends! This time I am going to share the biography and works of one India’s leading contemporary female artists and she is none other than Anjoile Ela Menon who was born in 1940 in India to Bengali and American parentage. At the beginning of her studies, Anjoile went to Lawrence School, Lovedale in the beautiful Nilgiri Hills, Tamil Nadu. 

When she attained 15 years of age, she left her school and studied at the Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art at Mumbai. She completed her graduation from a famous girl’s college of Delhi University “Miranda House” in English Literature.  During her college days, she was very impressed with Modigliani and other Indian art diamonds such as Amrita Sher-Gil and M F Husain. By the age of 18 years she had already sold some of her paintings and at this age she has held her first solo art exhibition of paintings with variety of styles.

By seeing her brilliant creative skills, the French Government gave her a scholarship to study further at the Ecole des Beauz-Arts in Paris. Before returning to India, Anjoile travelled extensively throughout West Asia and some places of Europe where she studied Byzantine art and Romanesque. Her paintings are in some major art collections.  One of her major art work was “Yatra” which was acquired by the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, California. She is a famous muralist. She loves to paint in various medium such as masonite and oil, water color etc. she also works in other media as well which includes glass works etc. she is an award winning artist and had represented India at several art shows. As far as her later life is concerned she married her childhood love who later retired as an admiral. She has been awarded Padma Shree in 2000 which is the fourth highest civilian award in India, She is in Limca book of Records and lifetime achievement award 2013 which was given to her by government of NCT of Delhi. Her paintings are in many private and public collections and many of her art works are acquired by museums nationally and internationally.  She has been invited by the U.S. State Department, British Council and by French Contemporary Art in the year 1996. Recently a book titled “Anjolie Ela Menon” has been published on her life and art works. She currently lives and works in Delhi.
