Whether you layer to achieve a particular look or just to stay warm, it never hurts to have fresh combinations on hand.

Here are the top tips for layering like a fashion girl.

1. Have your layering essentials.

While fashion is all about personal style, there are a few primary pieces that are essential to any fashion girl’s layering arsenal.

       A sleek black turtleneck
       A printed button-down shirt
A worn-in denim jacket with patches
       A flirty fit-and-flare skirt
       A statement t-shirt
       An oversized patterned cardigan
       A tuxedo blazer
       A voluminously chic coat
A fashion-forward hat and scarf set
       Ankle boots

These are 10 pieces that can be mixed and matched to keep you looking stylish all season long.

2. Start with the thinnest layer.

When getting dressed in the colder months, always build your outfit from the thinnest to thickest pieces.

For example, start by slipping into your most beloved silk camisole, then choose a slightly more substantial blouse. And then pull out this season's cashmere sweater, and top it all off with a denim jacket or large coat. Alternatively, if you want to wear a chunky knit, skip the jacket since the combination will look too bulky.

That being said, when layering, you also want to feel comfortable. If you are beginning to feel like you can't move your arms or legs, you probably need to take off a layer.

3. Monochrome is chic.

Monochrome dressing is really on trend this season, which is perfect for fashion girls who need to layer. To utilize this style of dressing, pick one piece that portrays the vibe of the look you are going for and then stay with that color. This may mean dressing all in red, all in blue, or in a classic all-black look.

If you want to mix it up a little bit, you can always stay within a color palette. A pastel outfit can be made up of creams, pinks, beiges, oatmeals, and ivories. A trendy fall combination is a burgundy, rust, gold, and cream palette. You can also opt for the classic combination which consists of blacks, whites, and greys.

4. Invest in a blazer and a printed coat.

Blazers are flattering on all body shapes, as they provide a gorgeous structured look. This season, choose to invest in a blazer, as you can pair it with a cocktail dress, over a cami with an open button-up, or over a long-sleeved relaxed T-shirt and jeans. Basically, everything!

Similarly, having a fabulous printed coat in your wardrobe can be an outfit-savior. When wearing such a piece, you can have the most basic of outfits underneath and still look as though you spent a lot of time getting ready The printed coat does all the work for you!

5. Utilize your stand-out summer pieces.

What fashion girls love about layering is that it allows them to continue wearing their favorite summer pieces. You don't have to pack them away! Keep using those luxurious prints and feminine skirts.

Strategies for layering include adding a thin turtleneck under a silk tank, tights under a short dress, or throwing a midi dress over jeans — a more daring, but trendy, option.

Other ways to winterize your wardrobe include pairing strappy summer sandals with colorful tights, pairing a shirt-dress with over-the-knee boots, turning a summer dress into a winter skirt by pairing it with a chunky sweater, or adding a sleeveless, faux fur vest to every outfit formula.

Spend one afternoon or evening putting together different layered looks and then take a photograph of the ones you like, so you can instantly recreate them when you don't have too much time to think about it.

By doing this in advance, you can also see which pieces are missing from your wardrobe, enabling you to seamlessly order them online from modern streetwear brands to ensure that layering in the future will be a breeze!
